Building on the Handbook for Product Social Impact Assessments of the multi-industry Roundtable for Product Social Metrics and other guidelines from organizations such as UNEP-SETAC, leading chemical members of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) have joined forces to identify the ways to create a positive social impact. BASF, DSM, Solvay, AkzoNobel, Evonik Industries, Eastman Chemical, Henkel, Mitsubishi Chemicals and Sabic, teamed up to develop a method for chemical industries to identify positive and negative social impacts of products along the value chain.
The chemical sector produces ingredients that end up in all types of industry and consumer applications.
With this developed common framework, ‘Social Life Cycle Metrics for Chemical Products’ chemical companies can improve the social impact of products by thinking about health, safety and well-being of end-users, employees and communities. The guideline provides a shared vocabulary and metrics, creating a shared level playing field for the chemical sector. The group of chemical partners encourages industry and governmental partners to study the new guideline and cooperate to further improve the methodology. In the final stage of report writing intensive collaboration with the Roundtable created a very good alignment between the two reports.
