Pilots and Case Studies based on Handbook 2018

Right from the start the Roundtable members understood the Handbook requires testing  in real case studies. An important criterion was that it should deliver insights that were not known before, and it would deliver this with reasonable efforts, otherwise there would never be a business case.

 Akulon® RePurposed

With the newest version of the Handbook, DSM has initiated several studies on different product groups to test the methodology and engage the organization to understand the improved social impact assessment tool and identify benefits of its use. The product categories include materials such as recycled polyamide from fishing nets collected from the Indian Ocean, bio-based material from castor oil sourced from India and rapeseed sourced from Western Europe.

Social Impact of meat extended shelf life solutions

Corbion’s meat safety solutions offer protection against Listeria growth and extended shelf life. In this case study, we analysed two products, Opti.Form Ace P37 and Verdad N15. Both have similar functionality in terms of safety and shelf life but address different markets.

This report describes the whole sequence of a first  case- study and the lessons learned.

Case studies based on earlier versions of the Handbook

During Phase 5 members were working on the following cases:

  • Steelcase worked on a case to test the new topics for users also in the Circulair Economy. This will be continued in Phase 6.
  • Mahindra performed  a case with the new defined social topics

Two cases were done in phase 4. Results led to extension of the methodology with an additional stakeholder group and datatools were tried out.

Farmers and Agriculture (coffee & guar)

Nestlé and Solvay: extension of the methodology with a fourth stakeholder group and social indicators: small-holder farmers.
